Timeless, Classic, and Elegant; all aspects of women’s clothing that no longer seem essential. Rachael Mathews (an upcoming Tailor and Designer from Gloucestershire) uses this as a focus for her first collection, Elizabeth James. Rachael has been inspired by fashions during the Twentieth Century from a young age and started her career in London, working in the world of the costume before deciding to specialize as a Bespoke Tailor. Using Dior as her primary influence, her silhouette stands firm while working hand in hand with the soft, natural shapes of a female figure.
What does the brand stand for?
We stand to bring back elegance into women’s tailoring. Small details and flattering shapes shouldn’t be lost in order for a woman to wear a suit. We combine a classic silhouette with the needs of a 21st-century woman.
Where does the brand come from?
The brand takes influence from designers such as Dior and Chanel and their work dating back to the 1950s, whilst combining style with the classic art of Savile Row tailoring.
What is the brand’s vision statement?
Timeless, Classic, and Elegant; all aspects of women’s clothing that no longer seem essential. We intend to bring bespoke tailoring into the high fashion circle of the 21st century. Whilst each piece will be fully bespoke to our client, we will develop our house style through seasonal collections in order to compete with fashion brands as well as tailoring houses.
Our brand offers Savile row quality, bespoke tailoring for women. We use traditional tailoring techniques, top quality fabrics and combine design to create a personal experience so that our client feels as involved in the process as possible.
Currently, there are not a huge number of tailors who are open to going down the route of design. With people being more conscious about sustainability, there is a growing need to know every detail about where our clothes are made. We are offering our clients garments with top quality, that are made by hand, in London.
Rachael says, “ When a man puts on a suit, he demands attention. His suit is made to flatter his body. At work, his superiors recognise him while his inferiors respect him. With Elizabeth James, I’m hoping to reflect that same kind of attention for women who don’t want just to wear your average grey suit!”
When asked her plans, Rachael’s answer was definitive. “I want to keep the art of Bespoke Tailoring alive. Elizabeth James is a collection, yes, but each piece was made especially for my models. Bespoke Tailoring isn’t just about the finished piece; it’s the experience we give to our customers. Although my house style will mirror throughout, all future work will be unique to my client and finished with all ‘Bespoke’ qualities.
