This week I have attended the week of Graduate Fashion Week. Graduate Fashion Week is a charity organization founded in 1991 by Jeff Banks CBE, Vanessa Denza MBE, and John Walford to unify both UK and International universities and create a stronghold for the creative industries.
Showcasing the work of over 1,000 of the very best students and graduates from the most influential and inspiring universities around the world, Graduate Fashion Week represents the future of creative design talent. Attracting 30,000 guests each June, the annual event features 23 catwalk shows, exhibitions from over 32 universities and an acclaimed Gala Award Show along with packed live talks and workshops schedule featuring leading names from the fashion industry.
An unrivalled platform for the promotion of new talent, Graduate Fashion Week bridges the gap between graduation and employment and is responsible for launching the careers of some of the most successful designers of our time including Christopher Bailey MBE, who was the winner of the first ever Graduate Fashion Week Gold Award, Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson and Julien Macdonald.
This year graduate fashion week was hosted from the 2nd of June until the 5th. Models wore collections from the graduating students of eight universities: Glasgow School of Art, Greater Brighton Metropolitan University, Falmouth University, Leeds Art University, Plymouth College of Arts, University of Huddersfield, Cambridge School of Art, and Solent University, who walked the first show of the event at GFW19.
I particularly liked Ka Yee Lee’s collection, graduate from Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts. It featured oversized, extended and stacked blazers which formed a deconstructed suit aesthetic throughout the collection. Ka Yee Lee or also known as PRE(SS0C) (@pres.studio on Instagram), hand-stitched 40 shirts together to emphasize what a person might inherit when wearing a suit in this work culture, she suggested that this could be societal pressures or expectations, for example. Overall it was really effective and stunning to watch down the catwalk, I expect to see a lot more from Ka Yee Lee in the years to come, so please check her out!
