How To Get Rid of Rough Lips?

by Hanah • 04 Jul 2017

Dry, chapped lips are an unfortunate side effect when the weather gets cold. Think about it - your lips are always exposed to the elements which cause them to become dry and even crack when the air outside is both frigid and dry. Also, the wind and even excessive sun exposure can cause chapped lips. As anyone who has suffered from dry and chapped lips knows this condition is both frustrating and hard to solve.
Luckily using the tips below you can have soft lips even during the coldest months of the year. Do keep in mind though that if your lips are chronically chapped and irritated you might be suffering from a medical condition. Seek the advice of a doctor if your lips simply do not heal.

Protecting and Caring For Your Lips
The skin on our lips is thinner than other areas of your body and as such is quite vulnerable to the elements.

This vulnerability quickly leads to dry and dehydrated lips especially during the colder months when the air both inside and outside lacks humidity. What little natural moisture on your lips any products you put on your lips quickly evaporates under such conditions. Fortunately, with a little effort, you can make your lips feel better.
To care for your lips follow these tips:
Don't pick at any flaky skin on your lips - exfoliate instead.
There are a few different ways to exfoliate your lips. You can buy a product that helps exfoliate or go the do-it-yourself route. If you want to go the DIY way it is easy to make your lip exfoliator. One way is to go directly to your kitchen - mix a little sugar with some oil like olive oil or coconut oil and gently massage into your lips. Or get an old, soft toothbrush and buff your lips to remove flakes.

Make sure you always have a lip balm with you. Stash one in your purse, the car, your nightstand, and in your desk at work. That way you can make sure you always have a way to protect your lips.

Drink plenty of water and use a humidifier at home so that the air in your home is less dry.

Before going outdoors be sure to protect your lips with a product that has SPF. Why? Unfortunately, our lips are prone to skin cancer because they do not secrete sebum (oil). This oil contains Vitamin E which is an antioxidant that can protect our skin from cancer. When it comes to sun protection lips are often overlooked - don't make that mistake.
Even though this is easier said than done try not lick your lips too much. When you lick your lips always you dehydrate them.
Can You Get Addicted To Lip Balm?
There is a beauty rumour that says your lips can be addicted to lip balm. It turns out that there is little scientific proof to this rumour being true. Instead, it is more of a psychological effect that occurs when you always apply lip balm. You feel that your lips are dry and need more lip balm even though in reality they do not.
Products To Try
Though you can't get addicted to lip balm, you need it daily. Here are some recommended products. Remember that during the day you need a product with SPF. Finding the right lip product for you is usually a matter of trial and error. Not everyone is going to like the same product. Luckily lip balms are available in a wide range of prices and formulations, so there is something for everyone.
