ANCIELA, fashion inspired by once troubled Colombia

by Vera • 05 Mar 2019

Anciela is a womenswear label that celebrates Colombian folklore with a modern twist. Founded by London based Fashion Designer Jennifer Droguett.

The brand portrays a neo-femininity that plays with the masculine Colombian attire to rebel against Latin American traditional feminine beauty ideals. We want to empower women to build their own idea of beauty beyond gender stereotypes and the stigma around being sexy.

We've asked Jennifer, the creative director a few questions about the brand and their new collection and what inspired her to follow this direction.

What does the brand stand for?
We believe in creating light-hearted clothing both functional and fun to encourage women to mix bold colours and dynamic silhouettes. We want garments to empower and truly shape the wearer to be their unique self in any situation. We produce everything in London, reducing the environmental impact, ensuring good labour standards and delivering beautifully hand-crafted designs.

Where does the brand come from ?
The brand is based in London, but the founder Jennifer comes from Colombia. She has developed the brand to pay homage to her roots and cultural heritage. In a time of uncertainty and Brexit nostalgia has played an important role.

What is the brands vision statement ?
The brand portrays a neo-femininity that plays with the masculine Colombian attire to rebel against Latin American traditional feminine beauty ideals. We want to empower women to build their own idea of beauty beyond gender stereotypes and the stigma around being sexy.

What does your brand brings new to the fashion industry?
We want to bring new narratives, inspired by once troubled Colombia. We want to show the world another face of this country besides narcos and plastic surgery. Anciela wants to bring the magical and joyful Colombian spirit into British Fashion.
“I grew up surrounded by loud family parties where dancing was mandatory and showing off your most colourful outfit was the highlight of the night” says Jennifer Droguett, the Creative Director of new womenswear label Anciela, which launched its AW 2019 collection in Brixton this week.

The Medellin, Colombian-born designer cut her teeth on big brands like Viktor & Rolf, House of Holland and emerging designers like Sadie Williams, Richard Malone and Artschool, before setting up shop on her own.

“Working for these fashion houses has taught me a lot. But it also made me eager to create fashion that represents the things I can relate to. My cultural heritage is one of them- as South American you come from different places, my dad is from Chile, my mom from Colombia; we moved up and down a lot when I was little. I had the good fortune of exploring completely different people and places, from the bright green mountains of Colombia to the dry valleys of Santiago de Chile, it was fascinating”.
